Our thesis

Energy access is a generational opportunity.

South Africa has millions of homes that the grid will never reach affordably, and millions more whose electricity bill consumes too much of their income. PayGo solar is the bridge — small monthly payments, ownership at the end of the term, and a service network that actually shows up. We've been building that network since 2001.

A South African family at home using solar power

In partnership with EDF Renewables.

EDF Renewables is the renewables arm of EDF Group, one of the world's largest electricity producers. Their backing brings global expertise, capital discipline, and a long-term commitment to the African renewable energy market.

EDF Renewables South Africa

A global utility, investing locally.

EDF Renewables develops, builds, and operates renewable energy facilities across more than 20 countries, with a growing footprint in South Africa. Their partnership with KES Energy combines utility-grade engineering and balance-sheet strength with our deep, last-mile distribution and service model — a pairing built for scale.

Together we're extending what an Independent Power Producer can deliver: not only commercial and industrial generation, but residential energy access for households the grid has historically underserved.

Three reasons this works.

A practical business with a measurable social return.

Proven model

25 years of installs. One repeatable playbook.

Local agents, in-language sales, on-the-ground service. We've refined the unit economics of rural and peri-urban solar over a quarter century — and the model gets stronger with every region we enter.

Real demand

Millions of homes. Still under-electrified.

Loadshedding, rising tariffs, and unreliable supply have made affordable solar a necessity, not a luxury. PayGo unlocks the segment of the market that grid-tied solar and cash-up-front installers cannot reach.

Social returns

Light is infrastructure.

Every system installed is a child finishing homework, a fridge that keeps insulin cold, a salon that stays open past sunset. 1% of every system is reinvested in schools and clinics through our community programme.

We don't need to invent demand. We need the capital and the partners to keep up with it. That's the opportunity.
